Our article this month is entitled: Big Data is the New Oil: Can the healthcare industry leverage it? Big Data is the latest buzzword sweeping the healthcare industry and like so many others that have recently preceded it (e.g.EHRs, social media, mobile, telemedicine, cloud computing, etc.) it promises to be "transformative."  

 

However, you can hear the follow-up articles (i.e. six months to a year from now) writing themselves even before the buzz has reached its apex:  

  1. Big Data fails to deliver on its promise;
  2. Big Data's cost to implement far exceeds initial estimates; 
  3. Big Data leads to even bigger data breaches.

Big Data is the latest buzzword sweeping the healthcare industry and like so many others that have recently preceded it (e.g.EHRs, social media, mobile, telemedicine, cloud computing, etc.) promises to be "transformative."  

 

However, you can hear the follow-up articles (i.e. six months to a year from now) writing themselves even before the buzz has reached its apex:

You know that a  buzzword is catching when conferences start appearing with "Big Data" prominently featured and consultants start touting billions of dollars of ROI:

 

McKinsey Global Institute...says that if Big Data is used "creatively and effectively" by the U.S. healthcare industry...is worth more than 300 billion each year."
 

Never mind that we don't as yet have a definition for "Big Data" in the healthcare industry or that we don't have any idea what it means to use this new undefined thing "creatively and effectively."  It is nonetheless worth billions.  

 

Any longtime reader of this newsletter knows that are we far from Luddites. All the buzzwords mentioned in the introduction are enablers of an emerging (and hopefully improved) industry. However, none of them individually or in aggregate will transform the industry.  

 

What will transform the industry is redefining healthcare in a manner that leads to improved patient outcomes at significantly reduced costs.  We are years, perhaps decades, away from achieving this goal. However, there are lots of visible signs that the healthcare industry is inexorably moving, albeit in baby steps, away from the "fee for service" model, toward something more sustainable.   

 

We believe that "Big Data" will in fact be an important enabler to the transformation, but only if it can be used in a confidential and secure manner, and only if the healthcare industry can learn from others that have already been down this path.
